The lovely Gina McKee gives a standout performance as the single mother to young Jimmy Grimble, who wishes to overcome his adolescent angst by being a soccer star. Naturally, there are bullies. Naturally, he overcomes them. Along the way you as an audience member are treated to some very warm characterizations, genuine performances, a lovely subplot involving a house-squatting bag lady and a memorable musical score. Not as ‘big’ a film as Billy Elliot, but not to be pushed to the back of the row either, Jimmy Grimble is good for the whole family to enjoy.
