That Thing You Do!

(out of 5)

makes a notable directorial debut with this brilliantly edited, perfectly cast musical comedy. The story centres around a group of four friends in the sixties who form a band called The Wonders and, with their main song ‘That Thing You Do’, climb to the top of the American music charts to become one of the many one-hit Wonders of the decade. With a perfectly recreated look of the sixties taken straight out of an Ed Sullivan set, not to mention a whole host of authentic sounding songs written especially for the film, Hanks has made a musical-comedy gem, a non-stop frenzy of bubblegum excitement that always has something new popping up around each corner. Hanks himself makes a small appearance, as does his lovely wife in a small role as a kind-hearted waitress, but what you’ll probably be most impressed with (aside from Adam Schlesinger’s excellent title song) is how well a job does on screen; her role is virtually little more than ‘the girl’, but she grounds herself in every scene and makes sure you sit up and pay attention to her. Delightful.
