Tristram Shandy: A Cock And Bull Story

Cock And Bull StoryBBB.5

(out of 5)

Witty experiment in comedy by Michael Winterbottom that attempts to act as a sort of British Adaptation. Presenting a film within a film within a film, it stars the hilarious  as a fictionalized version of himself (complete with girlfriend  and their baby), playing the titular lead in a new adaptation of the novel The Life And Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Esq. by Laurence Sterne.  Coogan has to deal with the insecurity of his male co-star (an equally hysterical ), disagreements with writers and his director and a possible affair with a crew member. Largely improvised and brilliant from time to time, it ends without having made a very strong impression and doesn’t capture the journey of filmmaking that it means to lampoon. Coogan’s naked romp in a giant womb is memorable, as is a cameo by and Brydon’s obsession with the colour of his teeth. Look for costume designer ‘s reaction when her work is insulted during rushes, it exists in the background but it’s so extremely well done by this terrific character actress.
