Up At The Villa

(out of 5)

Not the liveliest film around, this is a handsome and elegant adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel. It stars  as a woman caught in one dangerous relationship with and nearly ruined by a fleeting encounter with .    stands out as one of the grand dames living in the countryside of Italy where the story takes place. Philip Haas is stepping a notch down from his previous film, the excellent Angels and Insects (also starring Scott Thomas), but with actors like these and such gorgeous settings (the production design being an especial plus) I found it worth sticking around for.
