Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant shine in this fantastic romantic comedy that is peppered with writer Richard Curtis’ self-honed brand of sparkling wit and brilliant supporting characters. Roberts plays a self-conscious American movie star filming in London who meets shy and slightly out of touch bookseller Hugh Grant. The two hit it off immediately, but she’s not sure if he’s just starstruck or really into her for real. They meet each others’ friends, they go on dates, they fight and nothing is unknown in this genre, but the stellar acting makes it all feel new. Roberts especially has never been lovelier or more subtly heartbreaking, and Grant’s stuttering charms have been toned down to perfection to meet her at every step. Great soundtrack and beautiful photography cap it off; don’t hesitate, it’s lovely.
