Italian director Ermanno Olmi made films of such delicate simplicity that they inspire awe in any viewer who comes across them. This beautiful little film is about the days in the life of a young man following his appointment to a position in a Roman clerical office. The office politics he encounters, the subtle nuances of the day, are all accentuated when his eye catches the form of a beautiful young girl who also works in the same building. The party scene in the last third is an example of the rare kind of beauty that Olmi has always been able to bring to the screen.
