Italy, 1963. 22 Dicembre, Sicilia Cinematografica, Titanus. Screenplay by Ermanno Olmi. Cinematography by Lamberto Caimi. Produced by Goffredo Lombardo. Music by Gianni Ferrio. Production Design by Ettore Lombardi. Film Editing by Carla Colombo.
Heartfelt tale by Ermanno Olmi, the filmmaker with the masterful command of subtlety. A young Milanese worker takes a post that he is offered at a Sicilian plant. The job is one of stature for him and he accepts it immediately, even though this means a lengthy separation from his fiancee. While living alone in his bachelor apartment, far away from home, he reflects on their relationship and has some deeply felt observations about his current work and the mild society around him. Beautiful to look at it, emotionally poignant and never in any way overt, this film won’t amaze you with any complex plot or profound revelations, but instead allows you to be saturated in its uncomplicated emotions and resonant experiences.
