This remake of the 1956 classic is a superb revisiting of a wonderfully creepy story. San Francisco Health department officials Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams see their dull jobs shutting down restaurants kick into high gear when the strange behavior of the city’s residents turns out to be the result of an alien invasion. Humanoid creatures are being grown in plant pods and the newly bred zombies take the place of their human counterparts…if you want to remain yourself, don’t fall asleep! Great makeup effects and some very scary chase sequences really boost the energy from the original, but what director Philip Kaufman does most impressively is maintain the level of otherworldly fascination and character depth that made the first one so good. A ripping good night at the movies.
