USA, 1993. Touchstone Pictures. Screenplay by Kate Lanier, based on the book I, Tina by Tina Turner and Kurt Loder. Cinematography by Jamie Anderson. Produced by Doug Chapin, Barry Krost. Music by Stanley Clarke. Production Design by Stephen Altman. Costume Design by Ruth E. Carter. Film Editing by Stuart H. Pappé.
Tina Turner’s volatile relationship with Ike Turner is brought to the screen with exceptional skill, thanks mostly to the two brilliant performances in the leads. Laurence Fishburne is charismatic and brilliant as the equally charming, equally acidic Ike, whose abuse of Tina (a sensational Angela Bassett) led her to divorce him after years of marriage and many successful hit records together. Never exploitative, and certainly never boring for a minute, this film is chock full of substance, passion, and in the end, compassion. Music lovers will definitely not want to miss it.
Academy Award Nominations: Best Actor (Laurence Fishburne); Best Actress (Angela Bassett)
Golden Globe Award: Best Actress-Musical/Comedy (Angela Bassett)
