Japan, 1966. Imamura Productions, Nikkatsu. Screenplay by Shohei Imamura, Koji Numata, based on the novel by Akiyuki Nosaka. Cinematography by Shinsaku Himeda. Perversely witty film by Shohei Imamura, about a man who makes pornographic films in an effort to support his girlfriend/landlady and her two children. His work finds him skirting the wrong end of the law, which is often a problem, plus he has a fixation on his girlfriend’s mealy-mouthed daughter while the landlady seems to be a bit too attached to her son. Imamura’s plotline goes everywhere at once and doesn’t sustain your interest throughout, but the humour with which the story is told makes it highly memorable, not to mention bold; it’s pretty risque even by today’s standards. The performances are fearlessly superb, and the witty ending is just the right touch for what is a fun if obscure experience.
