USA, 1999. Berns Brothers Productions, Cafe Sisters Productions. Story by Mel Frohman, Russ Firestone, Screenplay by Mel Frohman. Produced by Adam Berns, Christine Fugate, Craig Steel. Music by Denis M. Hannigan. Film Editing by Kate Amend, Christine Fugate.
Christine Fugate’s camera follows adult film star Stacy Valentine for four years and gets her to open up about her life and her work. Valentine makes a great subject, funny and warm and always completely forthright about her life, including her marriage as a young woman to an emotionally abusive man, through to her first photoshoot for Hustler magazine then on to superstardom as a porn star. Fugate is frank about Valentine’s line of business without ever indulging in exploitation: those looking for titillation might get something out of this, but it is at heart a truly personal exploration of the life of a very interesting woman. You’ll get so wrapped in her life you’ll actually be rooting for her when she finally gets to the two Adult Video Awards ceremonies that she attends (one in the US, one at Cannes). Remarkably good.
