Switzerland, 2001. Christian Frei Filmproductions, Schweizer Fernsehen, Suissimage, Swiss National Television. Cinematography by Peter Indergand, James Nachtwey. Produced by Christian Frei. Music by David Darling, Eleni Karaindrou, Arvo Part. Film Editing by Christian Frei.
Famed photographer James Nachtwey, whose honest artistic records of worldwide atrocities have been eye-openers to people everywhere, is the subject of this documentary. Christian Frei’s camera follows Nachtwey to Indonesia, Kosovo and Palestine as he takes photographs of conflicts and oppressed peoples, learning their stories and sharing them with the world. Frei also gets Nachtwey to talk about his personal life and origins, his inspiration in photography and the reason why he’s been so willing to spend literally decades putting his life in constant danger to do his job. Frei doesn’t get much out of his subject verbally, as Nachtwey isn’t exactly a chatterbox, but his work as an artist speaks for itself and that’s exactly as it should be.
