Ma Vie En Cinemascope

(out of 5)

Alternate title:  Bittersweet Memories

Energetic, passionate film version of the life of Quebec superstar Alys Robi. A performer from the age of 5, Robi (originally Robitaille) spent her teen years on the vaudeville stage of Quebec City before moving to Montreal and pursuing a career on an international level. She achieved that success and more, selling records around the world, singing on radio stations in Canada and the United States and becoming popular for the beautiful sounds of Latin music that were all the rage in the post-Carmen Miranda forties. Just as she was about to solidify her legendary status with a contract at Paramount Studios, a nervous condition invaded her ability to perform and she was placed in a hospital by her father where she was lobotomized. This story, full of both tragedy and triumph, was highly praised by Robi herself who enthusiastically confirmed its accuracy, and is brought to life beautifully by ‘ guns-loaded performance and the exquisite cinematography and costumes.
