USA, 1988. Paramount Pictures, Mirage Productions. Screenplay by Mitch Glazer, Michael O’Donoghue, based on the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Cinematography by Michael Chapman. Produced by Richard Donner, Art Linson. Music by Danny Elfman. Production Design by J. Michael Riva. Costume Design by Wayne A. Finkelman. Film Editing by Fredric Steinkamp, William Steinkemp.
Cute modernization of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol features Bill Murray in the kind of role that is tailor-made for him. He plays a soulless television executive who on Christmas Eve would rather be raking in advertising dollars than doing anything about the holidays. You know what happens from there: the ghost of Christmases Past, Present and Future visit him, though in this case the one from the past is a psycho cab driver (David Johansen), the present a goofy fairy (Carol Kane) and the future is represented by a terrifying Grim Reaper. Spirited performances make for fine holiday fun, and even a few touching moments as well.
