,  and ‘s boundary-challenging television show makes it to the big screen in this often hilarious but mostly shallow prequel to the events that take place on the series. Sedaris plays a former prostitute and reformed junkie who returns to high school in an effort to revive her comatose father and, while there, becomes desperate to be accepted by her peers despite the fact that she is decades older than all of them. Meanwhile, her school principal is hoping to bring honour to their institute by winning the statewide science fair, pushing aside the school’s science teacher (Colbert) and hiring a project expert () to accomplish the task. It’s really just an extra long episode of the show, but somehow it seems so much less prevalent on the big screen; there are great opportunities to dissect Middle American values that are missed, not to mention the possibilities to be even naughtier and go much further with the shocking humour (‘Are you thinking about entering the science fair?’ ‘No, I’m thinking about pussy, science fair’s for queers’). One would hope that any project involving Colbert would be a hell of a lot more dangerous than this one turns out to be, but at least Sedaris is terrific and the host of celebrity cameos (including the lovely  as well as ,  and ) are a pleasure.
