The magnificent has had one of the richest careers in American dance, beginning with his early collaborations with Martha Grahame and continuing through his own career and, when this documentary finds him, successfully running a dance company and teaching. Matthew Diamond’s wonderful film digs deep into a treasure trove of enjoyable material, interviewing friends and colleagues who talk about Taylor’s career (complete with some terrific stock footage), while also investigating the lives of those involved in the creation of his latest project. The director does an excellent job of letting the burgeoning dancer in the audience dream about the heights that the career can scale, while never pulling the punches on the downsides of this very difficult career. Marvelous stuff.
