Riveting courtroom dramas are a dime a dozen, but this shining example of quality filmmaking adds star power and Rob Reiner’s tightscrew direction and it’s a real winner. Tom Cruise and Demi Moore star as two dangerously inexperienced marine lawyers working on a case involving the murder of a private by his fellow soldiers. Cruise isn’t satisfied with the bad-boys-got-rough explanation, smelling a conspiracy that goes right up to the top with high-ranking military man Jack Nicholson (who veritably steals the whole show). Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon also star, but it’s Cruise’s gunfire energy that really keeps it all moving. Most impressively, he and Moore don’t share any romance on screen and the film grossed hundreds of millions of dollars anyway (talk about star power).
