Brian De Palma has done a great job with bringing the classic sixties television show to a nineties sensibility, and he’s got a veritable movie star like Tom Cruise to pull it off without a hitch. Cruise plays superspy Ethan Hunt, who witnesses his entire team get murdered in front of him and is then framed for letting their names leak to outside sources. Now disavowed, he teams up with fellow rogues Ving Rhames and Jean Reno to infiltrate the crime ring of a cyber thief (a delicious Vanessa Redgrave) while trying to discern if concerned fellow survivor Emmanuelle Béart is as honest as she seems. Staged marvelously, the film has an overly convoluted plot for added fun, then climaxes with a marvelous action sequence aboard a fictionally-enhanced English Chunnel ride.
