Femme Fatale

BBB.5

(out of 5)

starts the film off as a jewel thief who pulls a major heist during the 2001 Cannes Film Festival (during a hilarious reconstruction of the East-West premiere with director and star appearing as themselves). Stealing a jewel-encrusted vest from a slinky supermodel, our dangerous heroine outwits her own cohorts by disappearing off the face of the earth with the loot in tow. Seven years later, she’s the wife of an American ambassador () who brings her to France with him, unaware of the danger that this puts her in. Things are going well until a busybody paparazzo () photographs her against her will and plasters her face all over the country in the tabloids. Now, she and this photographer (who has gotten a bit obsessed with the lady) team up to help save her hide from the bad guys who are still wondering where their precious stones are located. Brian De Palma has no end of fun aping Hitchcockian film elements without ever putting in anything too original of his own.  The result is an airheaded delight, a ridiculous film with laughable situations and overripe sexuality that should be a hoot for anyone watching it. Romijn is particularly memorable, as she performs well and looks great but still can’t convince you that she’s in any way a movie star in the Sharon Stone sense of the term.
