Cinematographer Jan de Bont’s directorial debut is a fantastic action flick that grabs hold of you early and never lets you go. Keanu Reeves plays a SWAT Team member who has to save a whole grapple of lives when a psychotic madman (Dennis Hopper) announces that he has attached a bomb to a local Los Angeles bus. To stay intact, the bus has to maintain a minimum amount of speed or the device will be activated, so it is Reeves’ job to board the vehicle without it stopping and keep it going fast until an alternate solution can be found. Sandra Bullock deservedly found stardom as the plucky young lass on board who has to take over driving duties when the driver is incapacitated, and she and Reeves engage in a high-octane relationship during this extreme crisis. Featuring fantastic editing and a marvellous pace, this is one unforgettable ride. Do not, I repeat do not, watch the sequel.
