Bil’s rating (out of 5): BBB.5.
The mythology of ancient Greece is combined with the effects of Ray Harryhausen in this incredibly cheesy and endlessly fun adventure film. Harry Hamlin plays the heroic Perseus, who strives to save Andromeda (Judi Bowker) from the worse-than-death fate of marrying a monster. He travels across lands and endures many obstacles put upon him by the thunderous temper of Zeus (Laurence Olivier) in his quest to accomplish his task. The film has a somewhat clunky narrative, but the many celebrity cameos by the likes of Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress (aptly cast as Aphrodite, and also Mrs. Harry Hamlin at the time) and Harryhausen’s terrific effects will nail you to your seat and guarantee you a good time. This was the last feature film to have the benefit of the visual effects genius’s work, and it stands as a great testament to him.
