Machlis, Mike Nichols, Garry Shandling. Music by Carter Burwell. Production Design by Bo Welch. Costume Design by Ann Roth. Film Editing by Richard Marks.
Critics were unfairly harsh to this enjoyable comedy, probably because having Mike Nichols’ name in the credits promised more than they eventually got (and apparently they haven’t seen The Day of the Dolphin). Garry Shandling stars (and also co-wrote) as an alien from an all-male planet who is sent to Earth to father a child so as to prevent his species from dying out. Annette Bening shines as the woman he chooses as the baby maker; perfect casting too, because I honestly can’t imagine any interstellar being not wanting to spend every waking moment with this woman the moment they see her. Very witty, and I love it when Annette sings ‘High Hopes’.
