Jean-Louis Trintignant stars in this marvelous political thriller as a prosecutor who turns amateur detective after a liberal Greek politician (Yves Montand) dies in a mysterious “accident” during a peace demonstration in Athens. The army have overthrown the democratic government and are now trying to cover up not only their part in it but the fact that there was any murder in the first place. Mesmerizing in its complexity, this film has layer after layer that draws you deeper into the riddle of this man’s complicated life which has become a more dangerous subject now that he is dead. Based on Vassilis Vassilikos’ novel, which was inspired by real life events, this film’s subject matter made Greek film industry cooperation an impossibility in 1969, which is why it was financed by France and Algeria and filmed in French. Before Life Is Beautiful came out this was the only film to be nominated for Academy Awards for both Best Picture and Best Foreign-Language Film.
