Oh look, another movie about a junkie looking to get her kid back: where did they come up with this original idea? Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s unapologetic performance is the one thing to recommend this highly familiar tale, about an ex-heroin addict who has just been released from prison on parole and is looking to get her life back together. Living in a halfway house and doing her best to get a job in a children’s daycare, Sherry returns (and not always by choice) to her old habits of using her body to get what she wants while the threat of falling back into her drug habit looms constantly near. Meanwhile, her brother and his girlfriend are raising her daughter whose custody she is hoping the reclaim regardless of how the little girl feels about her. Visceral acting and believably unpleasant situations in this very harsh atmosphere are impressive but not really all that compelling.
