Gorgeously shot fantasy film by John Sayles, who brings to life a tale of selkies, half-human, half-seal creatures out of Irish folklore whom a little girl believes have kidnapped her baby brother. She has been told by her whole family that he has died and gone to heaven, but after hearing about selkies from a barroom conversation, she is convinced that this is the case with her beloved sibling. Touching, memorable, and directed with the exceptional grace that Sayles is known for, it is quite astonishing to see a filmmaker well known for making great grownup dramas create something perfect for a much younger set.
