America’s coming-of-age in the seventies is represented by the dramatic events in an average suburban family, who find themselves unable to deal with the lifestyle changes surrounding them: key parties, free love, government scandal (Watergate in this case), X-rated films (Linda Lovelace in Deep Throat) and their kids’ growing up faster than kids ever did before.  Joan Allen is top-notch as the maternal head of the family whose repressed passions find themselves finally showing up in heartbreaking ways when the changes around her become too difficult to bear. Fluid direction by Ang Lee, excellent writing by James Schamus and the best ensemble cast of the year after L.A. Confidential, plus Sigourney Weaver fans will be especially pleased.

The Criterion Collection:  #426

Cannes Film Festival Award:  Best Screenplay

Golden Globe Award Nomination:  Best Supporting Actress (Sigourney Weaver)
