There is so much to admire about this film that its emotional sterility is forgiveable…almost. Melissa Mathison’s screenplay tells the life story of the current Dalai Lama, from his birth in his native Tibet, to his discovery as the reincarnation of the Buddhist leader, through to his exile to India in the sixties. Martin Scorsese does a sumptuous job of directing, but neither he nor the impeccable cinematography by Roger Deakins can flesh out the film’s characters enough to really give it a sensuously human core.
