Juliette Binoche is stunning in this engrossing drama as a violinist who begins an affair with a young male model, only to discover he has dark secrets that were probably best left undiscovered. Binoche takes it upon herself to interrogate every last member of the young boy’s family to discover the truth about his past, with director Andre Techine emphasizing a deliberately slow pace that tantalizes the audience, revealing each bit of the truth like peeling an onion. Despite a vague ending, the fantastic assortment of strong characters are the film’s best quality. Features the fantastic Carmen Maura in a small role.
