Original title: Not Wanted
USA, 1949. Emerald Productions Inc.. Story by Paul Jarrico, Malvin Wald, Screenplay by Paul Jarrico, Ida Lupino. Cinematography by Henry Freulich. Produced by Anson Bond, Ida Lupino. Music by Leith Stevens. Production Design by Charles D. Hall. Costume Design by Jerry Bos. Film Editing by William H. Ziegler.
Studio actress Ida Lupino stepped outside of the major commercial area and directed a number of films through independent means, making movies with riskier subject matter than was generally seen on the silver screen. In this film, Lupino co-directed (following original director Eugene Clifton’s heart attack two days into production) a story that she also co-wrote about a young woman who gets pregnant on a casual date and has to deal with the social ostracism she is bound to face. She goes in search of the baby’s father to no avail, then following the baby’s birth nearly goes out of her mind. Powerful stuff, a bit dated by today’s standards in execution, but refreshingly honest work. The unedited version is called Not Wanted.
