Waltz With Bashir

Bil’s rating (out of 5):   BBBBB.

Original title:  Vals Im Bashir

Extraordinary achievement in cinema that combines animation, documentary and fantasy as Ari Folman looks back at Israel’s involvement in the Lebanese civil war, often referred to now as “Israel’s Vietnam”. Folman is unable to properly recall particular events during battle and is hounded by dreams, prompting him to seek out friends, fellow soldiers and anyone else who lived through the ordeal in an effort to piece together the missing pieces. Many of the recollections are given by interview subjects who were filmed and then animated afterwards. What results is an animated masterpiece that goes between factually recreated battle sequences and journeys into the psyche, perfectly scored with music that gets under your skin as effectively as the images and stories do.
