Original title: L’Aimee
Arnaud Desplechin films the selling of his family home and spends the entire hour of this delicate documentary interviewing his father about his family. Senior Desplechin recounts the tales of his mother, who died of tuberculosis while he was still an infant, and her two strong-willed sisters, while Desplechin’s probing camera roams through the house and films its cozy but majestic rooms and gorgeous possessions. The film would end up being something of a non-fiction prelude to the director’s great masterpiece A Christmas Tale of 2008 (then later referenced in My Golden Days), and while it is too minor to be considered magnificent (it feels more like a DVD extra than anything else, and now exists as one on the Christmas Tale release), it is definitely worth a look for those who love this extremely talented filmmakers’ work.
