USA, 1993. New Line Cinema, Fourth Vision. Screenplay by Gus Van Sant, based on the novel by Tom Robbins. Cinematography by John J. Campbell, Eric Alan Edwards. Produced by Laurie Parker, Lucy Phillips. Music by k.d. lang, Ben Mink. Production Design by Missy Stewart. Costume Design by Beatrix Aruna Pasztor. Film Editing by Curtiss Clayton, Gus Van Sant.
Incomprehensible adaptation of the Tom Robbins novel is Gus Van Sant’s worst film. Uma Thurman stars as a cowgirl with unusually large thumbs who treks across the country in search of her true love (Rain Phoenix), along the way encountering a mass assortment of odd characters. Uneven and badly scripted, it makes very little sense and only comes to life when it focuses on the beautiful music and songs written by kd Lang and Ben Mink (the soundtrack is a worthy buy). Other than that, it’s a complete washout.
