Beautiful drama directed by Terence Davies about life in the Old South. A young boy grows up in an unhappy household with his explosive father (Denis Leary) and depressed mother (Diana Scarwid) and only finds happiness when his radio singer aunt (Gena Rowlands) sweeps into town. The curiously lush cinematography is exceptional, rife with powerful images that will stay with you forever: the sight of Scarwid weeping from her uncontrollable emotion during a temple revivalist’s speech is exquisite.
