USA, 1993. Warner Bros.. Screenplay by Robert Getchell, based on the book by Tobias Wolff. Cinematography by David Watkin. Produced by Art Linson. Music by Carter Burwell. Production Design by Stephen J. Lineweaver. Costume Design by Richard Hornung. Film Editing by Jim Clark. New York Film Critics Awards 1993.
Tobias Wolff’s autobiography is brought to the screen with grace and fine dramatic intensity. As a young man (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), Wolff has to watch as his loving mother (Ellen Barkin) nearly destroys the both of them by marrying a terrifyingly abusive man (Robert De Niro) whom she deems a good provider. Not in any way an easy watch, the film is incredibly tragic but eventually rewarding, and Barkin is brilliant as the woman who eventually decides that enough is enough.
