Coming on the heels of his excellent Heavenly Creatures, Peter Jackson’s Hollywood debut is a disappointment. Michael J. Fox plays a ghost buster who survives a near-death experience only to be left hanging in the balance between two worlds. We learn about his scam operation as a low-rent exorcist before he is forced to take on an evil superpower that is terrorizing the domains of both the living and the dead. Jackson uses many characteristic camera tricks that are obviously a product of his fertile imagination, but the script eventually lets his visual sense down. Look for a cameo by Heavenly Creatures star Melanie Lynskey.
