Bil’s rating (out of 5): B.5. France/USA, 1993. Brooksfilms, Gaumont. Story by J.D. Shapiro, Evan Chandler, Screenplay by Mel Brooks, Evan Chandler, J.D. Shapiro. Cinematography by Michael D. O’Shea. Produced by Mel Brooks. Music by Hummie Mann. Production Design by Roy Forge Smith. Costume Design by Dodie Shepard. Film Editing by Stephen E. Rivkin.
Mel Brooks continues in his quest to make a spoof as good as his brilliant Young Frankenstein, and continues to fall flat on his face. Where Spaceballs was about as pointless as movies get, at least it was funny; this dry take on the many cinematic versions of Robin Hood hardly ever manages to induce more than a low-brow chuckle. Cary Elwes is game in the lead, and Amy Yasbeck is delightful as the chastity-belted Maid Marian (a joke mined almost twenty years earlier by Woody Allen in Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex *but were afraid to ask), but everything else about it is less memorable than if it had been a skit on Saturday Night Live.
