Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…And Spring

(out of 5)

Original title:  Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul Geurigo Bom

This exquisite film gives profound depth and beauty to a deceptively simple story. Modeled after the earth’s seasons, it tracks the life lessons taught by a monk in a tiny Korean monastery to his young apprentice, who goes from boyhood to maturity and is eventually in a position to pass on his teachings as his master did. Circular references abound everywhere, but none of the stylistics of the storytelling feel intentional or overt. Gently directed with masterful precision, it is an unforgettable experience. It’s also the only film on record to ever make me feel sorry for a snake.
