Nanni Moretti directs and stars as a psychiatrist whose happy, quiet family life is tragically interrupted when his teenage son is killed in a diving accident. Plunged into a world of complete sorrow, Moretti is unable to concentrate on his work or avoid being reminded of his dearly departed no matter where he looks. His wife one days receives a letter from the son’s girlfriend, a girl heretofore unheard of by the family, and suddenly a gift is given to them that offers a little comfort in their grieving. This heartbreaking, precise drama feels perfectly natural at every step of the way, making cinematic beauty out of life’s everyday normalities. You’re so taken in by the honesty of it that something as benign as looking at a photograph suddenly has you in tears.
