Although it sags somewhat in the middle and introduces an extraneous subplot in its last third that is very much out of place, Sunshine is still a brain-powered science-fiction film that dazzles the eye and gives the brain something of a workout as well. A group of scientists travel aboard a spaceship towards the centre of our galaxy in the hopes of sending a nuclear bomb into the sun that will rejuvenate its hydrogen fusion and keep it from burning out. The attempt to save mankind requires the sacrifice of quite a few comforts, all of it playing out with magnificent detail and frightening intensity. The photography and sets are gorgeous and the cast is a healthy assortment of the bold and the beautiful.  It could be better, but it’s also the movie that Mission To Mars really wanted to be.
