Shallow Grave

SHALLOW GRAVEBB

(out of 5)

Three flatmates advertise for a fourth roommate and take on what they think is the perfect candidate. When they find him dead of a drug overdose with a suitcase chock full of money beside him, they decide to cut up the body beyond recognition, bury it and keep the cash for themselves. Sounds like an easy enough enterprise, but accomplishing it proves to be more work than it’s worth, particularly when the real owners of the loot follow the trail to our friends’ apartment door. Danny Boyle’s debut film has a clever (though familiar) premise, but his characters are so incredibly unlikable that you’re not likely to enjoy the ride too much. From the moment we meet this trio they actually seem like the kind of people who would chop up a dead body for cash, so sending them down the rabbit-hole that the plot provides is in no way surprising or entertaining. Still, Boyle shows a lot of the crafty style he improved upon in his second critically-acclaimed feature Trainspotting.
