In the year 2020, fire-breathing dragons have destroyed most of the world’s population by burning and destroying everything in their path. In the English countryside, one group of survivors led by Christian Bale manages to stay alive in an old castle that has been altered to be made habitable below ground where they are safe from the monsters and their dangers. In comes American hero Matthew McConaughey, who reveals to Bale that he knows how to get rid of the creatures once and for all, but to do it the two of them along with a helicopter pilot (Izabella Scorupco) will have to travel to London to kill the species at the place of their origin. Trouble is, Bale was the one who as a child woke up the original dragon from his underground slumber and spawned this entire epidemic, so now he’s a bit reluctant to return to the place that holds so many answers to the secrets of his past. Superb visual effects dominate this exciting story that is told eagerly and without any unnecessary complications; the many exciting sequences are definitely enough to overcome the sometimes bad dialogue and logical lapses in the plot. All three leads deliver fully committed performances, and there’s an amiable supporting cast to boot.
