Zach Braff directs and stars as a struggling Los Angeles actor who flies home to New Jersey to attend his mother’s funeral. He hooks up with an old friend () and meets an off-the-wall girl () with whom he finds a connection in the midst of a mini-breakdown. Visually stylish and punctuated by fresh dialogue, the film trades in on too many cliches (the emotionally foggy boy being saved by a quirkier-than-all-shit girl is straight out of the Cameron Crowe vault) but Braff’s energetic direction keeps it all afloat nonetheless.
