USA, 2004. Camelot Pictures, Jersey Films, Double Feature Films. Screenplay by Zach Braff. Cinematography by Lawrence Sher. Produced by Pamela Abdy, Gary Gilbert, Dan Halsted, Richard Klubeck. Music by Chad Fischer. Production Design by Judy Becker. Costume Design by Michael Wilkinson. Film Editing by Myron I. Kerstein.
Zach Braff directs and stars as a struggling Los Angeles actor who flies home to New Jersey to attend his mother’s funeral. He hooks up with an old friend (Peter Sarsgaard) and meets an off-the-wall girl (Natalie Portman) with whom he finds a connection in the midst of a mini-breakdown. Visually stylish and punctuated by fresh dialogue, the film trades in on too many cliches (the emotionally foggy boy being saved by a quirkier-than-all-shit girl is straight out of the Cameron Crowe vault) but Braff’s energetic direction keeps it all afloat nonetheless.
