USA, 1992. Touchstone Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Touchwood Pacific Partners 1, Nothing On Productions. Screenplay by Marty Kaplan, based on the play by Michael Frayn. Cinematography by Tim Surhstedt. Produced by Frank Marshall. Production Design by Daniel Maltese. Costume Design by Betsy Cox. Film Editing by Lisa Day.
Hilarious adaptation of the hit play features terrific comic actors at their best. The film shows two dress rehearsals and one performance of a silly bedroom farce, slamming doors and all, watching as the actors’ personal problems degrade the quality of the performance until it is left a complete mess—and the audience eats it all up! Peter Bogdanovich directs at a furious pace, with leads Carol Burnett, Michael Caine (as the play’s director), Christopher Reeve and Nicollette Sheridan all shining in their delightful roles. It’s a charming piece of fluff, zany and fast-paced, and thoroughly enjoyable.
