Cher is phenomenal as the mother of a boy with a notable facial deformity (played by Eric Stoltz under excellent makeup) whose tough exterior often hides a soft and protective nature towards her son. Treated by his peers like a monster, Stoltz must endure people’s immediate reactions to his physical appearance, while his mother fights her hardest to give him all the same chances that every other kid has. She also keeps up hope of his survival despite the medical community’s prognosis of an early death. Phenomenal acting in this fact-based story and terrific direction by Peter Bogdanovich make this an experience you’ll never forget.
