Australia, 1998. Goalpost Pictures, R.B. Films. Story by Tim Winton, Screenplay by James Bogle, Peter Rasmussen. Cinematography by Martin McGrath. Produced by Rosemary Blight. Music by Peter Cobbin. Production Design by Nicholas McCallum. Costume Design by Wendy Cork. Film Editing by Suresh Ayyar.
Obscure Australian film has ten times more atmosphere than actual plot, and doesn’t even get by successfully on that. A paranoid rancher lets his most ignorant fears get the best of him, leading him to think that an unstoppable evil is coming to take his farm from him. His kindly neighbour (an excellent Richard Roxburgh) thinks he’s overreacting and his drab wife (Brenda Blethyn, in a thankless role) doesn’t know what to make of it at all. The film wants to be creepy, but after the first weird half it’s just boring.
