Marisa Tomei followed her Oscar-winning role in My Cousin Vinny with her terrific performance in this so-so romantic comedy. She plays an overworked, overtired waitress who falls in love with the sensitive busboy (Christian Slater) who works at her diner after he saves her from being assaulted by a couple of thugs. What makes this film a cut above most others in the genre is that its characters aren’t perfect teen supermodels, but real people who find each other and, in doing so, find for themselves a small moment of peace. The Love Story ending is a bit infuriating, but the fresh appeal of its stars makes it worthwhile.
