Adam Sandler makes another bid for dramatic success by putting on Barbra Streisand’s hair from A Star Is Born and mourning his family. Years after being roommates with him in dental college, Don Cheadle sees Sandler on the street and is heartbroken to find he doesn’t remember him, in the fog of grief after having lost his wife and daughters on a 9/11 airplane. Cheadle begins spending time with his old friend as they relive their college days, with Cheadle eventually realizing that Sandler loves his company because it takes him back to a time when his family didn’t exist. Mike Binder’s emotional drama is often a bit too heavy in its approach, but it’s also incredibly sensitive and perceptive, brought to life with deft performances that enrich the material without ever pushing too hard to be profound.
