Kathy Bates is exceptional in this difficult family film. She plays the single-parent provider to six kids who packs the whole crew up and abandons city life in favour of something more suitable for her children. Finding themselves in a run-down house on the outskirts of a rural town somewhere in the midwest, the clan starts off with great hardship but eventually manages to pluck through. Bates couldn’t be more suited to leading this film, and Edward Furlong shines as her eldest son, but the whole thing feels so laborious to watch and not because of how depressing it is.
