Thirst (Torst)

ThirstBB.5

Various plot strands fit together uncomfortably in this enjoyable but strange drama. Rut is on a lecture tour with her husband and, after a chance encounter with a former lover, flashes back to when they were together and she got pregnant with his child. In the present she argues endlessly with her husband, while his ex-girlfriend goes to a psychiatrist who immediately puts the moves on her. Later, she meets up with a female friend who tried to win her affection years after she had tried to win Rut’s. A bit too much convenient connecting between the characters, yet for some reason the many plots (based on stories by author Birgit Tengroth) never believably make a cohesive whole and are often hard to follow. As always, director Ingmar Bergman contributes strong dialogue and gets great performances out of the actors.
