Uninspiring animated feature will distract the kids but doesn’t qualify among the greats. Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh, both doing excellent voice work, play a couple of con artists who journey down the Amazon in search of gold and riches. They find it, but it’s when they get their hands on the prize that their problems begin. Beautifully animated, with gorgeous vistas of recreated South American landscapes, this film suffers from a lack of good character motivation and from too much reliance on modern humour (the pseudo-basketball scene sticks out like a sore thumb). It’s also over much too quickly to really be felt, only punched up here and there by Elton John’s catchy tunes.
